I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the purpose that each of our lives hold, the reasons we get up the in the morning, who we count on and who counts on us. In this age of internet, Facebook, tweeting, texting and a general lack of real reciprocal human contact it has occurred to me the often our real purpose in life becomes clouded and eludes our detection.
What do you do, who do you know, where do you live, are all questions that seem to have superseded the most critical one…Who are you?
Some folks find their purpose in religion or spirituality, others in their net worth, still more of us count on the labels we assign to our existence to reveal our true identity.
Often people who are isolated, marginalized and excluded never really find out who they were meant to be in the world because their lives can become so bereft of authentic relationships (outside of the service delivery mode) that they find themselves simply existing as a vessel for the efforts and “charitable service of others”.
Real purpose is found in relationships. I wait in anxious anticipation for you to make me real because you choose to see me and my role in the world as imperative. Make no mistake about it…it’s all about what we choose to see in each other.
I want you to take a minute and watch this trailer for a stellar documentary called “The Way We Get BY”. At first I thought it was going to be a movie about mindless patriotism and war. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It is about humanity, purpose and the way in which our relationships to other people give our lives purpose…even when hope fails you.
Everyone has a purpose – whats yours?
