When Special Education is Not So Special:

This has been a bad week for segregated classrooms, special education, and bullying in the US. In three different US States, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Ohio, three separate and industrious students with special needs took matters into their own hands, by using their video capable cell phones at school to covertly video and audio tape the Teachers and Teachers Aids (who are entrusted with their care, nurturing and education) abusing them within the special needs classrooms.

Sometimes separating kids with labels from their same age peers can be a recipe for abuse. Grouping the most vulnerable together decreases the chance that anyone will have the courage or fortitude to speak out when such a power differential exists between student and teacher.  See our round-up of news stories below.
