Autistic Beginnings

The Guardian has documented a story that demonstrates the power of family leadership. Read how one families perseverance in a time when parents were encouraged… and moreover pressured, to surrender their children with disabilities to institutions, stood firm and raised their son in a loving, caring home environment. This is an interesting account of one of the first people with the label of Autism in the United Kingdom.

Think of this…with the increase of available and accessible prenatal screening it will become easier and more socially acceptable to systemically and genetically eliminate many disabilities from humanity. In doing so- we will also stand the chance of losing their families. Families who consistently tell us how much better their lives, and the community is, for the presence of their children with disabilities.

If we lose the strength, resilience, and acumen for social change these families have gifted the world with-what other arenas of justice will suffer.
Show me a family with a member with a disability, and I’ll show you a family who cares about justice, marginalization, and interconnectedness.
None of which we can live without.
